Kenya Power and Electricity: Managing Your Utility Account from Abroad
Keeping the Lights On from Afar
Electricity is essential for any Kenyan property, whether it's occupied by family, tenants, or sitting vacant. Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) is the sole electricity distributor in Kenya, and managing your account with them from abroad requires understanding their systems, payment methods, and processes for handling common issues like disconnections, new connections, and meter problems.
For diaspora property owners, proactive management of your electricity account prevents the cascading problems that come from disconnection — from inconveniencing tenants to potential security risks from dark, unoccupied properties.
Types of Electricity Accounts
Kenya Power operates two main metering systems. Postpaid meters measure consumption and you receive a monthly bill. Prepaid (token) meters require you to purchase electricity tokens in advance. The trend is toward prepaid meters, which offer better control and eliminate billing disputes. If your property still has a postpaid meter, consider requesting a conversion to prepaid for easier remote management.
Each account is linked to a meter number and the property address. Ensure the account is registered in your name (or your company's name if the property is owned through a corporate entity) to maintain full control over the account.
Payment Methods
Kenya Power accepts payments through M-Pesa (Paybill 888880 for prepaid tokens, 888888 for postpaid bills), bank transfers, the Kenya Power self-service portal (selfservice.kplc.co.ke), and at designated payment points. For prepaid customers, purchasing tokens generates a 20-digit number that is entered into the meter to load credit. Tokens can be purchased from anywhere in the world through M-Pesa or online banking.
Setting up a standing order or automated M-Pesa payment for postpaid bills prevents disconnection due to missed payments. Some diaspora property managers handle utility payments as part of their service, ensuring consistent payment and record-keeping.
Common Issues and Resolution
Power outages, while less frequent than in the past, still occur. Report outages through Kenya Power's toll-free number (97771), their social media channels, or the self-service portal. For individual property issues — tripped meters, faulty wiring, or connection problems — a Kenya Power technician visit may be needed, which requires someone present at the property.
Billing disputes on postpaid accounts are common, often resulting from estimated readings when meter readers can't access your property. Providing regular self-readings through the portal helps maintain accurate billing. For prepaid customers, token loading failures occasionally occur and can be resolved through customer service.
New Connections and Upgrades
If your property doesn't have electricity, applying for a new connection involves submitting an application to Kenya Power with your title deed, approved building plans, and the connection fee (which varies by location and distance from the nearest transformer). Processing takes 30-90 days depending on complexity.
For properties requiring more power — perhaps you're adding commercial use or installing heavy equipment — a capacity upgrade may be needed. This involves an application, technical assessment, and potentially upgrading the transformer or service cable.
