Buying a Car in Kenya from Abroad: New, Used, and Import Options
Choosing the Right Vehicle Purchase Option
Having a reliable vehicle in Kenya is essential whether you're managing property, running a business, or preparing for your eventual return. For diaspora Kenyans, buying a car remotely adds complexity to what's already a significant purchase. Understanding your options — buying new locally, purchasing used locally, or importing — helps you make the best decision for your needs and budget.
Each option has distinct advantages and pitfalls, and the right choice depends on your budget, intended use, and how quickly you need the vehicle.
Buying New from Local Dealers
Purchasing a new vehicle from an authorised dealer in Kenya is the most straightforward option. Major brands — Toyota (the dominant market leader), Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Hyundai, and others — have established dealer networks with showrooms in major towns. New vehicles come with manufacturer warranties, after-sales service, and the assurance of knowing the vehicle's complete history.
The downside is cost. New vehicles in Kenya carry significant import duties, VAT, and dealer margins, making them substantially more expensive than in many international markets. A vehicle costing $25,000 in the US or Europe might retail for $40,000-50,000 equivalent in Kenya. However, for those who prioritise reliability and warranty protection, the premium may be justified.
Buying Used Locally
Kenya's used car market is vast and varied. Vehicles are sold through established dealers, car bazaars (like the ones at Ngong Road Nairobi), online platforms (such as Cheki, Jiji, and Facebook Marketplace), and private sellers. Prices are negotiable, and good deals are available for knowledgeable buyers.
The risk with used vehicles is condition uncertainty. Odometer tampering is common. Accident damage may be poorly repaired. Mechanical issues may be hidden or unknown. Always arrange a professional pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic. Verify the vehicle's ownership through the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) system to ensure it's not stolen or encumbered.
Importing a Vehicle
Importing allows you to source specific models that may be cheaper or unavailable locally. Japan is the most popular source for used vehicle imports into Kenya, but vehicles also come from the UAE, UK, South Africa, and other markets. Import regulations require the vehicle to be a right-hand drive, not more than 8 years old from the date of first registration, and meet Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements.
Import costs include the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) value, import duty (25% of CIF), excise duty (20% of CIF plus import duty), VAT (16% of the total), and various levies. A used vehicle costing $5,000 CIF could end up costing $10,000-12,000 after all duties and fees. The Kenya Revenue Authority provides a duty calculator on their website.
Registration and Insurance
All vehicles must be registered with NTSA and insured before being driven on Kenyan roads. Registration involves obtaining number plates and a logbook (ownership document). Third-party insurance is the minimum legal requirement, though comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended. Annual inspection (for vehicles over a certain age) ensures roadworthiness compliance.
